We’ll start this comparison with a look at the engine choices where both vehicles offer a plug-in hybrid drivetrain option, as well as a traditional combustion engine option. Porsche, however, has fitted the PHEV variant to half of all Cayenne variants, and since it’s so common in the Cayenne line-up, we’re going to compare the Cayenne S E-Hybrid with the Range Rover Sport Autobiography (also with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain) for this comparison. First, you’ll notice a small price difference, and while that would appear to be an advantage for the Cayenne, we’ll see that this reduced price comes with translates to reduced equipment as well. It The Cayenne also comes with less power, but the most noticeable difference is in battery capacity. The Range Rover Sport’s battery can provide up to 51 miles of all-electric range, and although Porsche hasn’t published a range estimate, there is a pretty big difference in capacity – which will likely mean less range. Speaking of capacity, the Range Rover Sport once again comes out on top in terms of cargo space, and it’s once again not a close contest.

Excellent handling and maneuverability have always been hallmarks of the Porsche brand, but the Cayenne offers up a pretty lackluster turning diameter. The Range Rover Sport features four-wheel steering, as we’ve mentioned, and the difference it makes is clear. You get bigger wheels on the Range Rover Sport, as well as a panoramic roof, both of which cost extra on the Porsche. You can get air suspension on the Cayenne, but not on this trim, while it comes standard on this trim of the Range Rover Sport. The standard audio also offers a pretty stark difference between these two vehicles, and clearly illustrates the different approach the two companies take to standard equipment. There are upgrade options for both vehicles, but the general approach to all the stereo equipment levels for the Cayenne results in paying more money for fewer speakers when compared to the Range Rover Sport. Lastly, although the Cayenne is certainly better-looking than it was in previous generations, there is still an attempt to blend 911 styling cues with an SUV, and this results in an incongruent design. The more coherent styling of the Range Rover Sport gives it a more sophisticated presence.
