Luxury vehicles with genuine off-road ability are a pretty niche segment, but that’s not to say that vehicles like the Defender 110 are completely without rivals. Like the Defender, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a history that stretches back decades and boasts an iconic look that is instantly recognizable. But there are quite a few important differences between these vehicles that anyone in the market for a luxury off-roader should be familiar with if they’re going to make an informed decision.

The first thing that needs to be addressed here is price. The G-Class costs more than the Defender 110, a lot more, more than twice as much as the starting price of the 110. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but it does sometimes make G-Class owners reluctant to take their vehicles off-road, thus negating the whole point of the vehicle. Speaking of going off-road, one aspect where the Defender 110 drastically outperforms the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is its ground clearance. Thanks to its standard Electronic Air Suspension, the Defender 110 offers a maximum ground clearance of 11.5 inches (292 mm), compared to the G-Class’s fixed 9.5 inches (241 mm) – that means your Defender can get you to some places the G-Class simply can’t.

There is a version of the 110 that compares to the price of the G-Class: the Defender OCTA. We’ll get more into that in a bit, but it’s important to know that most versions of the Defender are less of a “cost risk” when you need your SUV to climb over rocks, or traverse a creekbed.

From a powerplant standpoint, both vehicles come with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. The G-Class makes a bit more horsepower, and will go from 0-60 a couple of tenths of a second quicker. But if tenths of a second are what you care about, there are performance versions of both vehicles. From Mercedes, there is the AMG G 63, which comes with a 577-horsepower V8 and will go from 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds. The Defender OCTA also comes with a V8, but produces 626 horsepower, enough for a 3.8-second dash to 60 mph.

The real advantage of the Defender 110 though, is its versatility. There is a wide range of trims and special editions. There is even an OCTA Black, a special edition of a special edition. These come with unique paint colors, wheel designs, and interiors. You have the option for a third row of seats, or a third row with second-row captain chairs. You just don’t have these kinds of options with the G-Class, which mostly just offers various aesthetic tweaks and a roof spoiler in a choice of three colors.

Winner – Defender 110

The Defender 110 is so much more vehicle than the G-Class. It’s suited to all of the same things, but also much more, and it looks great while it does it too.
